There Really Is a Blue Bird Inside the Black One

On X right now there's a game going around: line up 🐦‍⬛, then delete them one at a time. A blue bird comes out from inside. Elon Musk must be hinting at something — that's the read. ❶ First, this is not a trick of the eye. It really does happen. ❷ Why it happens is written down. Open the rulebook that decides how letters work everywhere — Unicode — and you find that the black bird is not one character at all, but three parts glued together: 🐦 (U+1F426, just a bird), an invisible symbol that does the gluing (U+200D), and a black square (U+2B1B). The spec carries it as a single line: 1F426 200D 2B1B ; black bird. Delete, and the glue comes undone, leaving the bird that was innermost. Which means that on the page of the spec, a black bird is a blue bird with black laid over it. ❸ The moment that line entered the world's standard file is on the record too — May 6, 2022, 16:14:52 GMT. 17 days after CAW was born. The shape was fixed 175 days before Elon Musk finished buying Twitter and wrote 'the bird is freed', and it started from a single document someone filed in 2019 asking for a crow emoji. Nobody could have planted it afterwards. And still — a rulebook that says to lay black over a blue bird is the stranger thing to find. (Verified as of Jul 29, 2026.)
